DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer who confirmed the incident to Class News said the police administration has initiated an investigation into the matter to establish exactly what happened.

He said: “On 4 February 2019 at about 1 am our snap check duty men at Kakpagyili in Tamale were allegedly attacked by unknown gunmen who opened fire on them and succeeded in taking the rifle of two of them.

“Police in the Northern region have initiated investigations into that matter to understand exactly what happened and also to identify the perpetrators and have them arrested. We are therefore calling on the general public to assist us with any information that can lead to the arrest of the criminals.

“According to our men who were on duty and who fell victim to the attackers, the armed men arrived in a Toyota salon vehicle. Three of them got down and the driver remained in the vehicle and immediately opened fire on the policemen. They managed to take the two weapons from them and fled the scene.

We have also briefed all our men at such duties and all patrol teams in the metropolis and beyond to remain alert, to remain professional in the conduct of their duties. Investigations are also ongoing on this particular incident for the perpetrators to be arrested and also to ensure that the public is protected going forward.”
