Road safety Commission holds review meeting

Sunyani, July 18, GNA - Mr Abraham Kwadwo Kwakye, Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister on Tuesday called on the National Road Safety Commission to enforce discipline and road traffic regulations to stem "the carnage" on the nation's roads.

He described the national statistics on road accidents as "so worrisome", considering the number of deaths and injuries recorded each year.

Mr Kwakye made the call at the opening of a mid-year review meeting of the Commission in Sunyani. It was organised to review its first quarter performance with the view to devising strategies in addressing high toll of road accidents.

He emphasized that road safety activities and programmes should be accorded the necessary attention and challenged the Commission to help address the unfortunate situation by attaining a quantitative accident-free status.

Mr Kwakye called on the public to play a crucial role in the promotion of road safety and suggested to the Commission to step up its public sensitisation programmes.

He noted that the public takes road safety for granted until loved ones are involved in accidents, adding, accidents could be reduced to the barest minimum to save resources if the public exercised caution on the roads.

Mr Noble John Appiah, Acting Executive Director of the Commission, urged members to renew their commitment and determination to work to prevent road accidents and casualties.

He appealed to regional and district coordinators to devote resources to support road safety efforts in their communities. "Recent road traffic accidents should be a wake-up call for all of us to be proactive by employing both conventional and unconventional approaches to bring the situation under control," he added. Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawire II, Omanhene of Sunyani Traditional Area, appealed to the government, Ghana Highways Authority and Department of Feeder Roads to take a critical look at the road network and also to cultivate the habit of maintenance to help in accident prevention.
