Road crashes improve in Volta/Oti regions during Easter

Volta and Oti Regions recorded only three motorcycle crashes during this year’s Easter festivities as against ten last year, data from the Volta Regional office of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) indicated.

There was no pedestrian knockdown during the celebration in the regions as compared to three last year.

Meanwhile, a total of 10 cases involving 13 vehicles and motorbikes were recorded as against nine last year with one person killed this year and four last year.

A total of 15 persons were injured this year from 21 last year. Figures from the Commission also showed a significant reduction in crashes and related fatalities and injuries in the first quarter of 2019.

A total of 124 road accidents were recorded between January and March 2019 as against 139 the same period of 2018.

This indicated a decline of 10.8 per cent, while the number of vehicles involved in the crashes similarly reduced from 217 to 160 during the period.

Accident related fatalities also dropped by 27 per cent in the regions recording a total of 33 deaths in 2019 as compared to 42 in 2018.

Injured persons recorded stood at 115 in 2019 first quarter, showing a reduction of 40 per cent-193 cases same period 2018.

Pedestrian knockdowns also went down from 37 to 36, with motorcycles involved in the crashes declining from 71 to 66 for the first three months of 2019.
