“Ridiculous” NPP must stop making “baseless” allegations – NDC

The National Democratic Congress has strongly dismissed allegations of corruption against President Mahama by the opposition New Patriotic Party describing them as “baseless”.

The NPP at a press conference addressed by a member of the party’s communication’s team, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah urged Ghanaians to reject President Mahama at the upcoming December elections saying “a vote for him is a vote for hopelessness for the youth and a vote for corruption”.

Yaw Buaben Asamoah, alleged that SSNIT has been forced by President John Dramani Mahama to use funds of suffering Ghanaian workers to retire a GH¢57.2 million debt owed by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, to the struggling Ghanaian bank, Merchant Bank.

Mr. Asamoah explained that SSNIT, which held a 98% stake in the Merchant Bank, in August this year, sold 75% of its stake to South African Bank, First Rand.

At the time of the sale, the NPP says Merchant Bank was reeling under some GH¢330 million debt, with Ibrahim Mahama being the largest debtor, contributing 19.2% of Merchant Bank’s total indebtedness.

But responding to the allegations, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a member of the communication’s team of the NDC said he is disappointed in the NPP for holding such a “bogus” press conference to make “flimsy and baseless allegations” against the President.

He added that the fact President Mahama’s brother’s company has run into debt with Merchant Bank does not make the President corrupt in any way.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu also stated that President Mahama’s decision to contract foreigners to construct the Kotokoraba market and housing units for the nation’s security agencies does not make him unpatriotic.

He said “was President Kufuor, Akufo-Addo and the NPP unpatriotic when they handed the construction of the Presidential Palace to Indians, was the NPP unpatriotic when they awarded contracts to the Chinese to build stadia for the nation?. He added how can a serious party hold such a press conference to make baseless and unfounded allegations".
