Revoke appointments of Sunyani West assembly members - Obiri Boahen

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen, has called for the immediate revocation of the appointments nominated by government onto the assembly in the Sunyani West District of the Brong Ahafo region.

He accused the government appointees of showing bad faith by failing to endorse the president’s nominee for the area.

“They should revoke their appointments because they have betrayed the trust government has reposed in them and appointed them to the assembly. I think it will be justified to revoke their appointments before the next sitting to confirm the nominee”, he said.

Nana Obiri Boahen wondered why persons who should rather have fronted government’s interest be seen doing the reverse threatening to liaise with the appropriate authorities to have them removed from the assembly.

Confusion on Tuesday broke out at the confirmation of DCE nominee, Mr Martin Obeng after he failed to secure the two-thirds majority as required by law to be confirmed by the assembly.

The situation is said to have sparked some controversy among his supporters leading to the police at the venue using canisters to prevent the rowdy supporters from causing further trouble.

Some persons however claimed the police fired teargas blaming the Regional Minister Mr Kwaku Asomah Cheremeh of instigating the confusion in order to have the nominee confirmed by hook or crook.

But reacting to the claims, he said ‘out of the 54 assembly members who were present and voted, 19 voted NO whilst 35 voted YES. He needed two-thirds [67 per cent] for the endorsement so there was a little confusion, suddenly we heard some explosion and what I saw was people sneezing. I did not order anyone to do anything. I also asked all the assembly members to come into the hall for a discussion. I realized the atmosphere was not appropriate and therefore reschedule the event”
