Revision of voters' register gets off to low response

Kumasi, May 6, GNA - The revision of the voters' register got off to a low response at many polling centres in the Kumasi metropolis.

The rush and tension usually associated with such an exercise, was conspicuously absent at all the centres the Ghana News Agency visited. At the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation Revenue Office polling centre, three newly qualified voters had been registered as at 1100 hours.

Out of 1,243 voters in the old register, only two had checked their names within the same period. Mr C.K. Nyame, the Registration Officer, was hopeful that since the centre is meant for mainly workers, the exercise would certainly pick up during the week days.

At the Ayeduase R/C Primary "A" and "B", the Ayeduase JSS "A" and "B" and the Kotei R/C Primary centres, the response was not different. The situation was the same at the Adum Presbyterian Nursery, where the Ghana News Agency team met the Member of Parliament for Subin, Mr S.K. Boafo going round to see to it that his party's agents were at post.

Mr Sam Ntow, Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission , said that every polling centre has been given 20 forms to register newly qualified voters. There are 3,478 polling centres in the Ashanti Region.

The revision exercise, which will be carried out during both week days and weekends, will last 10 days.
