'Retooling alone won't save state media' - President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that reviving Ghana’s state-owned media requires more than just retooling, calling for a comprehensive strategy to ensure their relevance in today’s fast-changing media environment.

His remarks followed a courtesy call by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at Jubilee House on Friday, September 5, 2025.

The GJA, led by its President Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, stressed the need for urgent government intervention to rescue struggling state media outlets.

Dwumfuor reminded President Mahama of his 2024 campaign promise to revitalise the sector, warning that decisive action was necessary to prevent its collapse.

Responding to the appeal, the President acknowledged the financial and structural challenges confronting the sector but emphasized that the issues extend beyond resources.

“The state media are caught up in the changing media landscape. Because the landscape has changed, people are consuming information from more sources than before. This means people are reading fewer newspapers, and people want less of the traditional media while getting a lot of their information from short videos and bloggers,” he explained.

He stressed that while retooling remains important, attention must also be given to strengthening content and production to meet the demands of modern audiences.

“It is not enough to just retool the state media but also see how we can enhance their production so that they continue to remain relevant. We can take best practices from international news platforms,” President Mahama said.
