Some residents in the Okponglo area of the Greater Accra Region have expressed outrage over a piece of land they claim rightfully belongs to them but has allegedly been taken over by individuals they identify as National Security personnel.

Speaking to GhanaWeb TV during a demolition exercise on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the residents alleged that a house previously owned by a politician in the past New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, had been sold to a private individual who intends to construct a fuel station on the site.

They claim that, in pursuit of this project, the new owner has demolished structures occupied by squatters, describing the move as driven by selfish interests.

The affected residents say they are determined to resist any further development on the land and will not allow the fuel station to be built.

One of the residents said, “We voted overwhelmingly for John Dumelo. I am on the Legon campus but because of the urgency of the situation, I am here now. They have come to destroy the only public toilet we have in Okponglo. Where do they want us to go and ease ourselves?

"We are trying to make a clean city. Where do they want the people to go? I know communicable diseases like cholera and all that happen when we defecate outside. The people are at risk health-wise.

"Secondly, what is the reason for coming to destroy this? But it shows that if you have political weight in this country, you can bulldoze your way through. And that is what we are standing against."
