Residents of Fankyenebra-Adiembra Electoral Area in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly have imposed a self-declared curfew from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. following relentless attacks by armed robbers.

The community says the rampant criminal activity has left many injured, robbed of valuables, and living in constant fear, especially due to the poor street lighting in the area.

Speaking to Otec News, several residents shared their horrifying experiences.

“I was attacked recently by unknown robbers, they took my phone, handbag with money and documents, and injured my knee,” a female victim recounted.

Another resident added, “I saw two men on a motorbike robbing a lady right outside my window. It was terrifying.”

A caterer also lamented how the situation has disrupted her business, saying she now fears to start work early, affecting her daily sales.

The residents blamed the rising crime wave on the lack of adequate street lighting, creating safe havens for robbers at night.

Though the Assembly Member for the area, Hon Dominic Osei Owusu, has installed some streetlights, residents say they are not enough to secure the community.

Akwasi Boateng, a member of the Unit Committee, said several petitions have been submitted to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) without any concrete response.

He appealed to the Member of Parliament for the area and the KMA to support the community with more streetlights, a watchdog committee, and regular police patrols to restore safety and order.
