Residents of Christian Village Call for Urgent Bridge Expansion to Curb Flooding

Residents of Christian Village in Accra’s Cemetery area are urgently calling for the expansion of a crucial bridge to address the devastating effects of recurring floods.

With the rainy season intensifying, rising floodwaters and severe erosion have worsened the collapse of surrounding land, threatening the bridge that links two communities. The area sits between the Okaikwei North and Ga East municipalities, where overlapping jurisdictions have slowed response efforts.

While some blame unplanned construction for blocking natural waterways, many residents say the real issue is the narrow bridge, which cannot handle stormwater runoff. Each rainfall leaves the bridge submerged, regularly flooding the area and putting lives and properties at risk.

According to a Citi News report on June 29, 2025, the bridge’s small drainage openings are the main cause of the flooding. Ongoing erosion has also endangered nearby structures.

A recent inspection revealed the bridge lacks railings, posing serious dangers to students and pedestrians.

Christian Tetteh Badger, Municipal Chief Executive of Okaikwei North, confirmed that the bridge has been included in the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project and will soon be reconstructed.

“The narrow bridge will be replaced entirely under the GARID project,” he assured, urging residents to report issues promptly to the Assembly for swift action.
