Research shows that 8th Parliament will be remembered for demanding accountability - Haruna Iddrisu

Education Minister-designate Haruna Iddrisu has indicated that research has shown the 8th Parliament will be remembered for its effectiveness in demanding accountability.

He said the minority was very responsible, with many people believing that they had been bought by the majority and the ruling government.

Regarding claims that he was in cahoots with the Majority while serving as leader of the Minority in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, for the first time, acknowledged being aware of the sentiments expressed by some members of his political party. However, he emphasized that he always prioritized the country's interest.

"As Minority leader, getting Bagbin elected was significant for me to change the course of parliamentary accountability in our country. Research has shown that the 8th Parliament will be remembered for its effectiveness in demanding accountability," he said during his vetting.

"They claimed I had been bought, so I asked Kyei Mensah Bonsu whether I was a fish to be bought. I told Hon. Kyei Mensah that some decisions are guided by the good of our country and its future, and I take those decisions responsibly."

"I even told Hon. Suhuyini that when President Mahama begins constituting his government, I will be appreciated as a former Minority leader. Even the work I’ve done here is appreciated by people who understand the decisions I made. Some decisions are collectively guided by the party, and we make decisions together."

He added, "But as I said, I have never regretted being replaced as Minority leader. I don’t hold grudges. I had my opportunity. I campaigned and worked for the NDC because I was dissatisfied with how the NPP had managed the country's economy and governance. I don't carry any ill will. I had a rare opportunity to serve, probably the first of its kind in my part of the world, if not the first in my country.”
