The Acting Rent Control Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has called for stricter regulation of real estate agents, urging property platforms to work only with licensed and credible professionals.
Speaking during the launch of GhanaWeb's maiden Real Estate Platform on July 9, 2026, the commissioner stressed the need to protect the public from unregistered agents, whom he described as criminals.
According to him, the establishment of the Real Estate Agency Council (REAC) marks a significant step towards sanitising Ghana's real estate sector.
"One very important issue here has to do with these agents. I really want you to open your eyes wide and make sure that the people who use the platform, especially agents, are credible. We now have the Real Estate Agency Council (REAC), and the CEO is a very good friend. I think we are now moving in the direction the government wants to see real professional agents, not the quack ones," he said.

He criticised individuals who operate without offices or proper identification and warned the public against dealing with such agents.
"Those who sit under trees with chalkboards without any identifiable location and write properties without even disclosing their names, these are criminals. Criminals should not be allowed to work with people," he stated.
The commissioner expressed optimism that GhanaWeb's new real estate platform would uphold high standards by ensuring that only registered and regulated agents are allowed to list properties.
"I hope and pray that this beautiful platform will not give opportunities to people who are not regulated and registered. If the Rent Control Department wants to play a role with you, then definitely we will scrutinise the kind of agents on the platform," he added.
