Rename UDS After JJ Rawlings

National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ludwig Akpene Hlodze, has called on government to consider naming the University of Development Studies [UDS] after NDC Founder and Ex President, Jerry john Rawlings.

He made the call while speaking to hundreds of students in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Engineering auditorium of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology [KNUST].

Ludwig recounted the successes chalked in the education sector under the NDC 1 regime including the establishment of polytechnics and the UDS and other projects that had been completed within the last 3 years under the Mills Administration.

He stated that the establishment of 2 new public universities, expansion of basic schools, elimination of school under trees, free exercise books under the Better Ghana Agenda only goes to underscore the seriousness the NDC government attached to Ghana’s education sector.

On the renaming of the UDS after ex-President Rawlings, Ludwig argued that Mr. Rawlings had done Ghana good by donating his cash reward from the Hunger Project to the establishment of the University, instead of using the money to develop any property for himself and his family.

“Jerry John Rawlings could have decided to use the money to build a house in Sogakope or Dzelukope for himself and his family, but he didn’t, he instead, used the money to establish the UDS which has contributed to the human resource development in Ghana. It is about time the NDC government considered renaming that University after Jeryy John Rawlings because he deserves it”, Ludwig stated.

On the hate speech by New Patriotic Member of Parliament, Mr. Kenndy Agyapong against Ewes and Gas, the NDC National Youth Organiser challenged NPP Flagbearer, Akufo-Addo to come out and condemn those statements if indeed he does not believe in his own all die-be-die inciting mantra.

He assured the youth of Ghana of the NDC’s commitments to a peaceful electioneering campaign, and challenged his colleagues in other political parties to do same.

“The NDC youth is seriously busy in making sure the people of this country see the development that is going on in this country, we are not ready and interested in militancy; we are not ready to take cutlasses and clubs to chase anybody because we have enough record in educating the people of Ghana to see reason in voting us into power; so I am challenging our colleagues in the other parties that we will not go the violent way because we have records to show for our stewardship; they must come out and denounce violence.

Nana Akufo Addo must be bold and condemn Kennedy Agyapong if he does not believe in all die be die. Lets protect the peace of this country and we can only continue the good work we are doing in this country if there is peace in this country”, he said.
