A gynecologist at the Medifem Specialist Hospital and Fertility Centre, Dr Ernest Saka, has stated that the most definitive cure for uterine fibroids is the surgical removal of the womb, particularly for women who have completed their families.
In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Stella Dziedzorm Sogli on Health Focus, Dr Saka explained that fibroids grow within the muscles of the uterus, and removing the womb entirely eliminates the possibility of recurrence.
“The ultimate solution or cure for fibroids is to take the womb out. If you’ve completed your family and have no intention of having more children, it is a good option,” he said.
Dr Saka also offered advice on prevention, encouraging women to begin childbearing earlier rather than delaying it.
According to him, postponing childbirth for too long can increase the risk of complications, including the development of fibroids.
“Have your children as early as you can. Don’t keep postponing. Don’t wait too long. At 35, if you haven’t started, that’s already a bit late. Technically, after 35 years, when you get pregnant, we call it ‘elderly primigravida,’” he cautioned.
