Refugee children neglected

Accra, Feb. 4, GNA - One hundred and fifty Liberian refugee children at the Buduburam Camp in the Central Region have been neglected by their biological parents to fend for themselves.

This has turned most of them into streets children who are causing nuisance to the surrounding towns and villages.

Mrs Irene S. Jayee, President of the Liberian Women Association at the Camp told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview on Tuesday that the children comprised those from Liberia who could not trace their biological parents before they arrived in Ghana and those that were born and abandoned at the camp.

She said the situation had become uncontrollable due to lack of adequate financial resources to care for the children, most of whom are compelled to go out to make a living.

Besides, Mrs Jayee said most of the women found it difficult to make ends meet and relied on the Association for their living.

She said the association was currently training women and some youths to acquire skills in vocations such sewing, bread making and hairdressing to make them self-reliant.

Mrs Jayee, therefore, appealed to organisations, churches and individuals to come to the aid of the association to assist in rehabilitating and supporting the women and the children.
