Reduction of road accidents on Winneba-Kasoa road

Winneba(C/R), Dec. 28, GNA - Rate of road accidents on the Winneba-Kasoa road reduced from 83 between January and November in 2005 to 51 within the same period in 2006 following constant police patrols and road checks. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nicholas Gasu, Winneba District Police Commander told the Ghana News Agency in a telephone interview at Winneba that 33 people died and 258 people received various degree of injuries in 2005 while 25 people died and 124 people were injured in 2006.

He attributed causes of road accidents to over-speeding, overloading, careless driving, wrong over taking and other motor traffic offences. DSP Gasu pledged the commitment of the police to continue educating drivers and patrolling the road to ensure further reduction in road accidents inn the area. "The presence of police personnel on the road make drivers behave well," he added. On security, DSP Gasu said the police had intensified night patrols in Winneba and its surrounding communities to protect lives and properties. He said the district celebrated an accident free Christmas this year, with a minor assault case reported as compared to last year.
