Rawlings wanted to kill me – Kofi Wayo

Founder of the United Renaissance Party, Kofi Wayo has alleged that former President Jerry Rawlings wanted to assassinate him.

Kofi Wayo told XYZ Breakfast Show host Moro Awudu on Monday June 24, 2013 that: “Rawlings wanted to kill me”.

“…I know what they told Rawlings, but I wasn’t scared of Rawlings because when it comes to guns, I’d outmatch him, I’d outgun him, so I know it so I didn’t bother, but he wanted to kill me,” he insisted.

He claimed Mr. Rawlings’ motive in trying to get rid of him was “because I was talking and I was well-to-do; he doesn’t like that. He wanna be the only guy with the money”.

The self-acclaimed energy expert and arms dealer who had been in the US for decades also said Mr. Rawlings feared his return to Ghana was to purposefully overthrow him.

“Somebody went and told Rawlings that I’d come to overthrown him,” Mr. Wayo recalled.

Asked if his claims were mere allegations or fact, Mr. Wayo said: “I know this as a fact from my intelligence” adding that: “I can assure him that Uncle Sam will protect me any day, but I don’t need Uncle Sam. I grew up in the army. I know what to do myself. I know how to assassinate people”.

Mr. Wayo, however, refused to specify whether the alleged assassination attempt was during Rawlings’ PNDC military regime or during his two constitutional terms as President.

The former president’s office has however shrugged off Mr. Wayo’s claims as “comical”.

Mr. Rawlings’ Spokesperson, Kofi Adams told the same programme that: “There’s no way Kofi Wayo is going to substantiate that and he’s made many such comments in the past and really one doesn’t see the head and tail of the things that Kofi will really say”.

Mr Adams added: “That is Kofi Wayo for you; he says all kinds of things because he just feels that nobody will really mind…so left to me alone, this is a matter that I’d let go because Ghanaians will be the best Judges of what he says”.
