Rawlings consoles National Chief Imam

Accra, June 21, GNA - Former President Jerry John Rawlings on Monday presented GH¢1,000 to Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam, towards the final funeral rites of the Imam's late younger brother, Alhaji Ibrahim Sharubutu, 82, in Accra.

In addition, he presented an undisclosed amount to the Council of Elders of the Muslim Community. Former President Rawlings made the presentation when paid a courtesy call on the Chief Imam to console him, accompanied by his wife, Nana Konadu. He said it was sad news for the Chief Imam and his family and hoped the good Lord would console them in their moment of grief.

Former President Rawlings also wished the Chief Imam good health. On the week-end's floods in various parts of the country, he advised Ghanaians to be extra cautious in order not to lose more lives and consoled the bereaved families.

Sheikh Sharubutu thanked the former first couple for the gesture, and explained that the death occurred during his absence and that he had to cut short his trip abroad to return home.

The final funeral rites for the late Alhaji Ibrahim Sharubutu is scheduled for Sunday, June 27.

He died on Monday, June 14, while the Chief Imam was in Copenhagen, Denmark, on a peace and dialogue mission. The Chief Imam returned to Accra last Saturday for the final funeral rites. However, he has postponed another scheduled trip to Tampa, Florida in the US till next month.
