Rapist gets 10 years

Akim Swedru (Eastern Region)- A 40-year-old farmer, Joseph Koomson, has been sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in hard labour for defiling an imbecile at Akim Akroso in the Birim South District.

He pleaded guilty.

The prosecutor, Police Chief Inspector L.K. Amoako, told the Akim Swedru Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Michael Woanya, that on 22 November, last year, the victim was sent to collect palm fruits from her elder brother at the outskirts of Akim Akroso.

While on her way she met Koomson and begged him for money to buy food but the convict took advantage of the situation and lured her into the bush and sexually assaulted her. The prosecutor said after satisfying himself, Koomson led the victim half way and left for his house.

A sister of the victim who detected abnormality in her walking questioned her and she narrated what happened. She could not, however, mention the name of the accused. A witness who, apparently, saw Koomson with the victim, led the police to arrest him.

The prosecutor said Koomson admitted the offence.
