Railway Network To Be Extended to the North-Minister

The Minister for Ports, Harbours and Railways, Prof.Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, has said that, the government is vigorously pursuing initiatives to revamp the rail industry into a vibrant and profitable organization in the country.

He disclosed that one priority area of the government is to ensure the extension of the railway network to the northern parts of Ghana. Consequently, he said, his Ministry has been engaged in discussions with the Chinese Embassy in Accra for a team of experts to visit the country by December this year so as to undertake a study on the viability of the project.

Prof Akumfi made this known when he took his turn at the “meet the press” series at the Ministry of Information Conference Hall today in Accra.

The Minister told the media that, following the final inception Report by the Transaction Advisors, a conference on the concessioning of the Ghana Railway Company Ltd. was held on the 22nd September, 2003 to find ways to modernize the Western, Eastern and Central railway network system for the economic prosperity of the nation.

Prof. Akumfi stated that, in view of the vehicular traffic problems facing commuters in the city, a sub-urban railway network to link Accra-Dodowa, Accra –Kasoa would be handled by private interests to help address the transportation difficulties.
