RTI Commission faces funding and logistical challenges - Stephen Owusu

The Head of Legal, Governance, Regulatory, and Research at the Right to Information (RTI) Commission, Stephen Owusu, has disclosed that the Commission is grappling with staffing and financial challenges.

Speaking with GhanaWeb TV during the launch of its fifth anniversary on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, he stated that current staff numbers fall far short of what is required to operate effectively across all regions.

"We are required to register our presence in all the regions. As we speak, we were given clearance for 120 staff members, but the Public Services Commission, I remember, recommended 360. So the 120 falls far short of the staff strength required," he noted.

Owusu further explained that the Commission is seeking additional clearance to recruit more staff to adequately cover the regions.

He revealed that the Commission intends to set up more offices by the end of the year.

"We are trying to push for more clearance to recruit additional people. We are establishing offices in Cape Coast and Tamale by the end of the year. We need staff in those areas," he remarked.

Since its establishment in 2020, the Commission has worked to advance the right of access to information.

The fifth-anniversary celebration of the Commission was held under the theme: "Championing Transparency and Accountability through Access to Environmental Information in a Digital Era."
