Quack Doctor in Prison Custody

A quack doctor operating in Kotoku, a village near Amasaman in the Ga District has been arrested for attempting to abort a 2-month pregnancy which eventually resulted in the death of his victim.

The deceased, Grace Awaga who was pregnant was sent to Alexander Akumey, the quack doctor by her friend, one Teikor and her boyfriend who are both at large, for an abortion on 6th April, 2005. According to police sources, as soon as Alexander began performing the operation to abort the 2 months pregnancy, the victim, Grace started bleeding profusely.

The accused then rushed her to the Nsawam Government hospital and abandoned her. The Nsawam hospital authorities further rushed the victim to the Koforidua Government Hospital due to the severity of her condition, but she died afterwards.

The relatives of the deceased then made a report to the Amasaman police, who subsequently arrested Alexander and the following items were recovered from him; a pair of scissors, various injections, a drip, hand gloves and an out-moded stethoscope as well as a blood pressure apparatus. He was arraigned in court yesterday and remanded into prison custody for further investigations until April 26th.
