Publish controversial research – Baako dares Atuguba

The Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Kweku Baako has added his voice to calls for law Professor Raymond Atuguba to publish damning research that establishes the political leanings of judges of the apex court.

“I’ll plead with Prof. Atuguba, to do us a favour, a huge favour to quickly publish the report,” he made the suggestion on News File Saturday.

The research, conducted by renowned law Professor, Raymond Atuguba, seeks to establish that the voting pattern of judges of the Supreme Court was influenced by the political party that appointed them.

Presenting his findings on Thursday at the 2018 GIMPA Law Conference, Prof Atuguba explained that he analysed one hundred political cases in Ghana, where it was established that the voting patterns of the justices favoured the parties which appointed them.

Commenting on the Research, Mr. Baako said the move is a finest idea, but however cautioned that without better and further particulars, it’ll be a dangerous exercise for one to consider.

“…If this kind of project is done in a way now we’re discussing it, it’s very dangerous. It’s an invitation to step into a minefield; that’s my candid opinion” Baako argued.

Baako’s position also corroborates that of the former CHRAJ boss, Emile Short, who’d insisted the publication of such work would be useful.

“…academic research is useful if we can critique the methodology,” according to Short.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice, Sophia Akufo and some Justices of the Supreme Court strongly disapproved the idea.

“It is an American type of research that you have done…that’s fine, but please be careful what you are importing into our environment,” the CJ has said.
