Public Forum on Energy Crisis

The Ministry of Mines and Energy has negotiated with some companies to invest in power projects in the country to supplement the Hydro-Electric power from Akosombo. Plans are also underway to build more dams in the country.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Communications, Mr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah, at a public forum at Dunkwa-on-Offin, in the Central region. He said over 20 companies have expressed their desire to assist Ghana solve her energy problem.

He said following President Clinton's recent to that effect. Mr. Spio-Garbrah advised electricity consumers to pay their bills to help the ECG and VRA to carry on with maintenance work to regularise power supply. The Deputy Minister of Roads and Transport, Mr. Mike Hannah, underscored the importance of roads to the economic development of a nation and said the government spends about 50 percent of its budget on roads.

He said the Ministry wil rehabilitate the old roads to give them longer life span instead of spending money on building new ones. Mr. Hammah said feeder roads will be reshaped and made motorable for the farming communities to cart their goods to the market and to reduce cost of food.

A Presidential staffer, Nana Ato Dadzie, explained the forthcoming unit and district elections and advised the electorate to choose the right calibre of people to represent them at the assembly.

The Deputy Central Regional Minister, Mr. H.Q. Jehu-Appiah cautioned against politicising the unit and district level elections. He explained the relevance of the Value Added Tax and urged the elites to act as agents and educate the public instead of polluting their minds.
