Pru District trains Peer Educators to fight child trafficking

Yeji (B/A), July 21, GNA - Forty human rights peer educators drawn from Yeji and Prang in Pru District of Brong-Ahafo Region have been trained to educate people about the effects of child labour and child trafficking in the area.

They were trained on issues such as domestic violence, child labour and child trafficking at a workshop organized by Project Abroad of Human Rights, a local human rights advocacy Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) on Tuesday.

The workshop was aimed at empowering focal persons to help to address the problems of child labour and child trafficking, especially in the Pru District.

Mr Ishmael Nana Ogyefo, Pru District Coordinating Director, commended the NGO for its efforts in helping to eliminate child labour in the district.

He, however, expressed concern about the alarming rate of child trafficking in the area and called on the people to support the NGO to bring the situation under control.

Mr Ogyefo asked the participants to help to identify problems that had contributed to child trafficking and child labour in their localities so that the NGO and the District Assembly would collaborate to curb that canker.

Mr Edward Tetteh, Programmes Manager of the NGO noted that the organization started its programme in Accra on pilot basis to identify communities that were confronted with the "twin" menace (Child trafficking and Child labour).

He said the NGO was set up by combined students from Japan, United States of America and Australia to disseminate information about human rights activities and to educate rural communities on the effects of child abuse.

Mr Tetteh hoped the participants would extend the knowledge and skills acquired to their relatives and friends to control child labour and trafficking in the district.
