Provide BDT workshops to schools-Teacher

Ms Rebecca Walker, a Basic Design and Technology (BDT) Teacher on Tuesday called on government to provide workshop for the various component of the BDT to enable students get a practical feel of whatever was taught in the classroom.

She also called for in-service training for BDT teachers and seminars to update their knowledge base on modern trade of designs and technology.

Ms. Walker told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that with the integration of the various subjects under the BDT, it had become necessary for the government to pay attention to that area.

She expressed worry that the teacher-training colleges were biased towards a particular area of BDT study which did not allow teachers to give off their best adding, “BDT teaching should be holistic”.

Ms Walker added that the situation had left many BDT teachers concentrating on one subject area to the neglect of others, which did not help in developing the artistic qualities of students.

She said to press home these and other demands, an association “Basic Design and Technology Teachers Association” had been formed.

Ms. Walker was of the view that time allocated to the teaching of the subject was also inadequate and did not afford students the opportunity to fully participate and bring out their best.**
