Prosecute owners of unauthorized structures on water ways

Mr. Kenneth Mensah has said it is time the assembly collaborated with the Town and Country Planning Department to prosecute those who have mounted unauthorized structures on water ways.

Mr Mensah who is the Municipal Coordinator for the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) of Tarkwa Nsueam, said this practice is fast gaining roots in certain parts of the municipality and should be brought to a halt.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Mensah said if immediate steps are not taken against this menace, lots of people will be affected whenever it rains heavily.

He said in 2011, a total of 2,796 residents in Tarkwa Nsueam were displaced by rainfall as against 180 victims in 2010.

Mr Mensah said though the government and the assembly are doing their best to save lives and property, it was equally important for people to refrain from building on water ways to enhance the free flow of water when it rains.**
