The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has called on the government to focus on providing adequate resources and facilities to all Senior High Schools (SHSs) to ensure equitable access to quality education across the country.
According to him, the disparities in facilities among schools have created unnecessary pressure on a few well-resourced institutions, compelling parents to go to great lengths to secure placements for their children in those institutions.
He added that improving infrastructure and logistics in every school will help address the recurring challenges in the SHS placement system.
SHS Placement: Centers overwhelmed as parents troop in to demand transfers
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, and monitored by GhanaWeb, Pratt noted that when schools are properly equipped, parents will no longer have to travel long distances or pay extra fees to get their wards into certain preferred schools.
“If all schools are properly resourced and have the needed facilities, no parent will have to travel far or pay money to get their ward into a particular school,” he stated.
Pratt also observed that the current system, where only a few schools are perceived as “top-tier,” undermines efforts to make education accessible and equitable for all Ghanaian students.
He emphasised that every child deserves access to quality learning conditions, regardless of the category of school they attend.
Here is how government plans to solve school placement challenges
His comments come in the wake of the ongoing Senior High School placement controversy, which has generated widespread public concerns over fairness, transparency, and accessibility.
The discussion follows recent remarks by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, that ten Category B schools will soon be selected and upgraded to Category A status as part of the government’s efforts to improve quality and reduce pressure on the most sought-after schools.
