Professor Adu-Boahen laid to rest

Juaben (Ash.), July 23, GNA - The late eminent Ghanaian Historian and Politician, Professor Albert Adu-Boahen, was buried at the Asante Juaben Presbyterian cemetery on Saturday.

The burial was preceded by a well-attended service officiated by the Reverend Thomas Boakye, Chairman of the Sekyere Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church.

Later in the day a grand funeral, which has been described as one of the biggest in the country in recent times was held for him at the forecourt of the Juabenhene's palace.

President John Agyekum Kufuor and his wife, Theresa, the Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, Mr Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi-Hughes, Speaker of Parliament and Mr Joseph Henry Mensah, a Statesman, were among the tall list of high-profile personalities at the funeral. Other personalities present included members of the Council of State, Ministers, Members of Parliament (MPs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, leading members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) including the National Chairman, Mr Mac Manu and the General Secretary, Nana Ohene Ntow as well as the rank and file of the party. Traditional rulers at the funeral with their large retinue, amidst the firing of musketry and "kete" drumming included Nana Otuo Serebour II, Omanhene of Juaben, the Queen of Juaben, Nana Akosua Akyamaa III, Oheneba Adusei Poku, the Akyempimhene and Nana Boakye-Ansah Debrah, Asokore-Mamponghene.

Praise singe rs from the northern parts of the country were also there.

President Kufuor made a donation of 50 million cedis while the NPP contributed 100 million cedis with Ministers giving 15 million cedis. The Speaker, staff of Parliament and the NPP Parliamentary caucus donated 20 million cedis.

There were other handsome donations from individuals, organisations and associations.

The Late Professor Adu-Boahen died on May 24, this year, on his 74th birthday and was honoured with a State burial in recognition of his contribution to the country's education and politics.
