Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has criticised the Attorney General (AG) for neglecting his core judicial responsibilities while engaging in what he described as “unnecessary press conferences.”
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Assafuah expressed concern over the AG’s delay in responding to a case currently before the Supreme Court.
According to him, it has been more than five months since the Minority filed the case, yet the Attorney General has still not submitted a statement of case as required by law.
“The Attorney General claims there are transitional presidential issues that make it impractical to file. But this is the same person holding press conferences and tagging people as corrupt when they haven’t even been heard in court,” he said.
Assafuah also backed calls for the suspension of the vetting of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice until the court determines the matter concerning the removal of the current Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
He warned that moving ahead with the vetting process could undermine the rule of law and erode judicial independence.

“The law provides clear procedures for the removal of a Chief Justice. If Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is confirmed while this case is pending, it will mean that we have all turned our backs on Justice Torkonoo’s fundamental human rights,” he stated.
Assafuah added that should the court later rule that Justice Torkonoo’s removal was unjustified, it would be impossible to reverse the appointment of a new Chief Justice.
“If I were in the NDC, I would ensure the matter is resolved in court before allowing the vetting to continue,” he added.
