Presiding Member suggests remuneration for Assembly members

Gomoa Afranse (C/R), June 9, GNA - The Presiding Member of the Gomoa East District Assembly, Mr Michael Tawiah, has appealed to the government to give Assembly members some remuneration to facilitate their work.

Mr Tawiah said since there was no 93free launch" anywhere in the world it was untenable for Assembly members to render services without getting paid.

He made the request at an orientation workshop for members of the Gomoa East District Assembly at Gomoa Afranse.

The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with the Institute of Local Government Studies.

Mr Tawiah commended the Ministry and the Institute for organizing the workshop which had given them insight into the district Assembly concept and had given them the 93tools" to work with.

He appealed to the government to resource the Unit Committees and the Town/Area councils to make them work effectively.

Mr Tawiah said the Assemblies were not functioning as expected because the Unit Committees and Town/Area Councils were dormant. He appealed to the Ministry to provide logistics such as motorbikes and bicycles for Assembly members to enable them to work efficiently.

Mr Isaac Kingsley Ahunu-Armah, District Chief Executive, stressed on revenue generation and urged the Assembly members to take that seriously as the Assembly could not function without money.
