President misrepresented on homosexual comments - Deputy Attorney General

Government has responded to what it calls the twist and turns of President Akufo-Addo’s position regarding the legalization of homosexuality in Ghana as well as the government’s position matter.

“The spin, twist and misrepresentation as the result of what the President said is unfortunate and ought to be put right”, a Deputy Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Joseph Kpemka Dindiok bemoaned.

According to the minister, President Akufo-Addo in a recent interview with Aljazeera’s Jane Dutton never endorsed or intended to legalize homosexuality in Ghana so far as he remains in office as President.

The President is on record to have said the country’s culture and tradition for now does not allow the legalisation of homosexuality but was quick to add that if public opinion changes, the law may just be amended.

General Secretary of Christian Council, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni Frimpong fears that if pressure is piled on government by advocates of homosexuality, it may cause a change in the law and the legalisation of homosexuality.

“Maybe I didn’t hear him well, so somebody should come and explain to us exactly the policy direction of this government as far as same sex marriage is concerned,” he demands.




“People were expecting answers from His Excellency the President and you don’t dictate answers to anybody to read”, the Deputy Minister fumed.

Speaking on Joy FM’s weekly news analysis program Newsfileon Saturday, Hon. Joseph Kpemka Dindiok however stated, the President was being realistic in answering questions from the interviewee.

“He was very clear, non unequivocal and was straight to the point”, Hon. Joseph Kpemka Dindiok also lawmaker for Timpani claims during panel discussion.

“He spoke English. …it wasn’t Latin. …it wasn’t Arabic where we [can] say we lack the knowledge to be unable to understand whatever he said”, the Deputy Minister pointed out.

“Mind you this is an astute lawyer, a human rights activist. …the most important thing I will like to state is that nowhere His Excellency President’s did he endorse homosexuality”.

Hon. Joseph Kpemka Dindiok therefore challenged those claiming the President in one way or other supports legalization of homosexuality to quote the exact words of the President from the interview.
