President Mills has failed Central Region- PPP

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has said the Central Region has not seen any meaningful socio-economic development under the Mills’ administration since its assumption of office three years ago.

It said it was unfortunate that none of the promises made by President John Evans Atta Mills to the Region have been redeemed despite the massive support he received from the people of the Region.

Mr Kwame Edu-Ansah, the Chairman of the Central Regional wing of the PPP, made the allegations at a press conference to express concern about the poor state of affairs in the Region, particularly in the area of education, economics and the general wellbeing of the people.

“We cannot point to anything that has improved the standards of living of people of C/R” he said and enumerated some of the pledges made by the President during his campaign in 2008 to include the provision of quality education and the construction of landing beaches, cold stores and pension scheme for fishermen.

Mr Edu-Ansah said, quality of education keeps dwindling and many communities scored zero percent in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), adding that the institution of mock examination for public school children was not the answer to the more than 1.5 million students who fail the BECE annually.

He said the government has failed to ensure compulsory and quality education for all, as checks by the PPP in both fishing and farming communities in the Region indicate that many children of school going age are out of school.

Mr Edu-Ansah said, a PPP government will foster quality education through better remunerations for teachers, the provision of better school facilities as well as the availability of instructional materials to make teaching and learning more conducive.

He said despite the promises by President Mills many fishermen have still seen no signs of the landing beaches, cold stores and free-flowing pre-mix fuels at low cost, rendering them poorer as the pair-trawling he promised to abolish goes on unabated.

The chairman also expressed concern that the country’s rivers were being polluted by galamsey operators from Dunkwa-on-Offin to the coast, whilst the government looked on unconcerned.

He said the PPP, was ready to offer alternatives that will facilitate quality education and also use the purchasing power of government to support local businesses in order to create jobs, and called on all Ghanaians to support the PPP for a great change in the country, adding that a vote for PPP was a vote to secure peace and progress for the country.

Mr Edu-Ansah took the opportunity to urge all Ghanaians to participate in the on-going registration exercise and warned that it was wrong for anybody to prevent others from registering because they do not belong to their party.**
