President Mahama reacts to death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga

President John Dramani Mahama has joined global leaders in mourning the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.

In a post shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Mahama described the loss as “A sad loss to Kenya, Africa and the world.”

He extended his condolences to President William Samoei Ruto, Mama Idah Odinga, the Odinga family, and the people of Kenya.

Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 80, while receiving medical treatment in India.

He was widely regarded as a beacon of courage and a father of democracy having dedicated much of his life to advancing Kenya’s democratic governance.

The late prime minister spent many years in opposition politics and contested the presidency five times, with his last attempt three years ago.

Despite never ascending to the highest office, Odinga remained a towering figure in Kenyan politics, admired for his resilience and vision.

His body arrived in Nairobi on Thursday, October 16, 2025, from India, where he reportedly died of a suspected heart attack.

A large crowd gathered at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive his remains amid scenes of grief and solidarity.

President William Ruto has since declared seven days of national mourning in honour of Odinga’s memory and his immense contribution to the political life of Kenya and the African continent.
