President Mahama forms high-level task force on health governance

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a new presidential task force on global health governance as part of his administration’s commitment to improving the health sector.

Speaking at the African Health Sovereignty Summit on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the president said that the high-level task force will engage global and continental stakeholders to explore innovative ways the country can redesign its health governance system.

“And what are the new commitments? Today I'm pleased to announce two significant commitments. The first is the presidential high-level task force on global health governance. This will be a convenient platform to engage global and continental partners to redesign the health governance systems for the world we live in now, not the world of yesterday,” he said.

The president also unveiled another initiative called the ‘Sustain Initiative,’ which he said will align with national budgets to prioritise health.

Additionally, he added that the initiative will also serve the purpose of mobilising capital from the diaspora into the health systems.

“The second will be the launch of the Sustain Initiative. And this means scaling up sovereign transitions and institutional networks. This is a bold African-led platform that will align our national budgets with our health priorities, will mobilise sovereign diaspora and philanthropic capital into our health systems, will foster cross-border learning, innovation, and accountability,” he indicated.

President Mahama concluded by advocating for a collaborative effort among African leaders and nations to build a health ecosystem for Africa that is sovereign and independent.

“I extend an open invitation to all nations represented here to join us in building an African health investment ecosystem that is driven by purpose and is powered by equity and anchored in our sovereignty,” he noted

The president continued, “And so, to conclude, the Accra Declaration for Health Sovereignty that we are discussing in this summit is more than a policy forum. It is a moral call to action. It is a strategic milestone and a continent-wide awakening.”
