“We are strengthening the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, expanding access to healthcare, and implementing apprenticeship programmes for our youth. I am delighted to announce that the government will officially launch the Free Primary Health Care Programme on April 15, 2026,” he stated.

President Mahama also entreated the CSOs to help create awareness about the programme and to monitor its implementation.

“I count on CSOs to support public education, assist us in monitoring implementation, and offer feedback to ensure this programme achieves real impact,” he appealed.

The Free Primary Health Care Programme is a key part of the government's plan to improve preventive healthcare and also ensure that all Ghanaians can access essential health services without financial barriers.

The programme will operate under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and focus on utilising Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centers, and polyclinics as the main entry points for care.
