President Kufuor returns from AU summit

Accra, July 2, GNA - Pressident John Agyekum Kufuor, returned home this afternoon from Egypt, Where he attended the 11th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union from June 30 to July 1. Briefing journalists on the meeting, Mr Andrew Awuni, Presidential Spokesperson and Press Secretary to the President, said the session mainly looked at pressing global issues such as the current food and fuel crisis.

He said as a measure to mitigate the situation, a number of recommendations were made for adoption and implementation by the Heads of State in their respective countries, adding that, African Heads of State who would be attending the pending G8 Summit were also urged to make specific recommendations to G8 countries, which were expected to help with the progress of Africa and the world at large. He said whilst the AU recognized the difficult political situation in Zimbabwe, it reiterated its commitment to ensure that peace and progress pertained in that country.

Mr. Awuni said President Kufuor re-affirmed the commitment of Ghana towards playing its role in the AU and also used the opportunity to bid farewell to his colleagues, as this meeting was his last as a President.

Ms. Sophia Akuffo, a Supreme Court Judge, was nominated to serve on the African Court of Human and People's Rights, Mr. Awuni said. Mr. Akwasi Osei Adjei, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said many resolutions were passed on sanitation, good drinking water, among others. At the airport to welcome President Kufuor were Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama Ministers of State and senior military and police Personnel. 02 July 08
