President Kufuor confers State Honour on Malian President

Accra, April 19, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Friday conferred the nation's highest State Honour, "Companion of the Order of Star of Ghana" on Malian President Amadou Toumani Toure. This is in recognition of his outstanding leadership and dedication to the strengthening of friendly ties between Ghana and Mali. The founding fathers of the two West African countries, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Modibo Keita laid solid foundation for friendship and economic co-operation culminating in the formation of the Union of Ghana-Guinea-Mali.

President Kufuor decorating the Malian leader, who was in the country for a three-day state visit, with the award at a state banquet organized for him, said it was their turn to "carry the torch further" and build on the good relations.

He noted that there was considerable potential for closer collaboration in the economic field and urged private sector operators to take full advantage of the opportunities for a more robust trade between them.

The use of transit facilities at the Tema and Takoradi Ports to expedite the transport of goods to Mali underscored the need to enhance their communication. President Kufuor therefore called for immediate re-convening of the Ghana-Mali Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation to streamline the administrative and legal framework necessary for raising their level of economic cooperation.

He praised President Toure for his Government's sound socio-economic programmes that were engendering growth, commitment to democracy, good governance and the rule of law.

"We are the more pleased that these developments have much in common with what is happening here Ghana."

President Toure noted that "Osagyefo Dr Nkrumah, Modibo Keita and Sekou Toure chose to link the destiny of Ghana-Guinea and Mali in a vibrant act of faith." That, he said, was something that should always inspire unwavering commitment to strengthen their relations and bond of friendship.

The Malian leader, a decorated retired military officer, said he would forever cherish the state honour conferred on by President Kufuor and remain eternally grateful. He returned home on Saturday morning after a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.
