President Kufuor Votes in District Elections

President J.A. Kufuor cast his vote today in the re-scheduled District Level and Unit Committee elections at the Dzorwulu open space polling station in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency - Accra.

He was the 16th person to vote at 9: 45 am. Speaking to newsmen later, President Kufour said it is very vital for him to exercise his franchise and that all over the world, local government elections do not attract much attention and sensationalism like Parliamentary and Presidential elections.

He said people are conscious of their duties in their localities and although they are not voting in groups in the early stages of the day, they would trickle in to vote. The contestants in the area are Ms Eleanor Atiemo Bampo and Mr Daniel Yeboah Manko.

Voting in the rescheduled Local Government elections started at 0700 at 31 Electoral District in five regions. Polling would close at 1700 hours unless they were extended for technical reasons. The first results are expected late in the night or on Wednesday morning to enable the Electoral Commission to declare the results. The EC rescheduled the elections because of the inability to complete the printing of ballot papers for the Unit Committee elections.

The districts voting in the rescheduled elections include Nanumba in the Northern Region, Awutu Effutu Senya, Upper Denkyira, Mfantsiman and Assin, in the Central Region and Ga, Tema, Okaikoi, Ablekuma and Ayawaso in the Greater Accra. The other Districts are Aowin Suaman, Sefwi Wiawso, Juabeso-Bia, in the Western Region and all the 13 districts in the Eastern Region.

The overall turnout was no better than last week's polls.
