President Kufuor Leaves For Freetown

Ghanaian President, John Kuffour is expected to arrive in Sierra Leone today, Friday for the very first time since he became president a year ago, to participate in the destruction of weapons at Lungi.

Kuffour will be received at the airport by President Tejan Kabbah.

The two presidents will then take part in the symbolic destruction of weapons that will mark the end of war in the country.

Speaking to the Sierra Leone daily, Concord Times, on Thursday , Presidential Spokesman, Prof. Septimus Kaikai would not say whether other heads of state are coming for the ceremony.

"What I can say for sure is that President Kuffour of Ghana has confirmed that he will come," he said.

Reports that Presidents Obasanjo of Nigeria and Konare of Mali would be coming could not be ascertained.

At the ceremony, representatives of the RUF, CDF and UNAMSIL are also to be present.

The destruction of the weapons of war is hoped to usher in lasting peace and development in war-ravaged Sierra Leone.
