'Prempeh Agyemang runway extension 90% complete' - Transport minister

The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has disclosed that the runway at Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport in Kumasi is being extended.

Speaking at the Government’s Accountability Series on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Nikpe explained that the runway extension, from 1,981 metres to 2,320 metres, is intended to accommodate more medium-sized aircraft and support the airport’s growing international operations.

“Following the completion of a new terminal building at the Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport, the runway, which currently measures 1,981 meters in length, is being extended to 2,320 meters to accommodate medium-sized aircrafts and facilitate international flight operations,” he said.

Providing a timeline for the project's completion, he said the extension is likely to be completed by the end of 2025, adding that it is almost complete, with 90% of the work already done.

“The project is 90% complete and it is expected to be completed by end of this year,” he said.

The minister also disclosed that, to support the government’s flagship 24-hour economy initiative aimed at boosting job creation, night flights at Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport and Tamale International Airport have been extended.

“Additionally, night operations have been extended at Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport from 8pm to 11pm and at Tamale International Airport from 6pm to 10pm, supporting government 24-hour economic policy and enhancing passenger convenience,” he added.
