Nkawkaw, June 4, GNA - A pregnant teenage girl at Gakope village near Kajaji in the Sene District of the Brong Ahafo Region, died three days after a quack doctor operated on her and removed the baby from her womb. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Kwame Danso, an eye-witness said on April 22 this year, the teenager, Esther Osabutey, started laboring and when she could not deliver after a prolonged labour, a self-styled doctor by name Ibrahim Moro, arrived at the scene and promised to operate and remove the baby to save the girl's life.
The eye-witness said without any anaesthesia or chloroform, "Dr. Moro" ordered some strong boys in the village to hold the pregnant girl firmly on the ground.
He then used a sharp blade to operate her, remove the baby from the womb and used ordinary tread to stitch the cut.
The eye-witness said three days after the illegal operation, Esther became weak and started sweating and was rushed to the Kete-Krachi District hospital in a boat where she died soon after admission.
According to the eye-witness, "Dr Moro" fled the village to Tamale to seek refuge when he heard about the death of Esther but was allegedly arrested by the police and sent to Atebubu for prosecution.
When the Ghana News Agency contacted the Atebubu police, the Station Officer, Chief Inspector Samuel Amoako, confirmed the story and said the Police were present when an autopsy was conducted on Esther's body at the Kete-Krachi hospital to determine the course death, but said he was not aware of the arrest of Doctor Moro in Tamale. Chief Inspector Amoako said Esther's baby was on admission at the Kete Krachi hospital and was doing well.
