Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called for unity within the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to enable government achieve its vision of providing good governance and prosperity for the people of Ghana.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Koforidua on Saturday, 7 July 2018, Mr Kufuor cautioned the party to stay focused because “power can corrupt” and if they are not careful, it will lead them to become complacent and conceited.

Mr Kufuor further urged the party to follow the footsteps of its founders, J.B Danquah,Abrefa Busia and Chief Dombo by working towards prosperity for the people of Ghana and at the same time practice good governance.

The former Ghanaian leader said: “The organisers of this conference could not have chosen a better theme for this meeting than: “Building a united stronger party and delivering prosperity to the people of Ghana”.

“Our party tradition enjoins us from the first time that the tradition was founded to be the vanguard for delivering good governance and prosperity for our nation. But how can we as a party do these if we are not united and purposeful and single-minded in the discharge of this unique responsibility bequeath to us by the doyen of our party politics?”

Talking about Good governance and prosperity, Mr Kufuor noted that one should not be sacrificed for the other.

“While pursuing good democratic governance, you should at the same time sanitise and have a sane well-informed economic governance. That is why it’s only the times the NPP takes power that you see both good governance and economic progress and development moving together in tandem but you cannot do these two things effectively and solidly together as a party without unity.”

According to Mr Kufuor, “Power has a way to trick people of even good intentions. Power they say corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, power can trick you, if you’re not careful you’ll become complacent, conceited and discriminatory.”

To this end, he urged the leadership of the party to stay focused and unite to promote the values of the party while pursuing good governance and prosperity for the people of Ghana.
