Ghanaian transgender Angel Maxine is optimistic that the president of Ghana will not sign the anti-LGBTQI+ bill into law.

According to him/her, the government wants to gain political points, hence the decision to force parliament into passing the bill.

He/she has urged members of the LGBTQI+ community not to be afraid; however, they must ensure they protect themselves.

“President Mahama will not sign this useless bill into law. The politicians just passed the bill because they want to score some cheap political points. The reality is that it will not be signed into law,” he/she said in a video shared via social media.

Ghana’s Parliament has passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill.

The bill was approved on Friday, May 29, 2026, and is aimed at criminalising LGBTQ-related activities. It was passed with new amendments that exempt some individuals and institutions from punishment under the law.

Under the revised provisions, people who provide legal advice or legal representation to individuals identified as LGBTQ will not be prosecuted.

The law also exempts journalists and media organisations that report on LGBTQ-related issues as part of their professional work.
Medical professionals, including those offering surgical, psychological, and counselling services to LGBTQ persons, are also not covered under the sanctions.

Before the final vote in Parliament, the Minority Caucus opposed the amendments, arguing that they show the original version of the bill sent to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assent was flawed.

Despite their objections, Parliament proceeded to pass the bill.
