The National President of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) is asking the nation to focus more on basic education because the poor quality of education in the country is as a result of the falling standards there.
Mr. Samuel Ofori-Adjei believes the quality of education at the Senior High and Tertiary levels depend mainly on the quality at the basic schools.
He bemoaned the current state of affairs where some students who sit for the BECE are of such poor quality to the extent that some schools resort to helping their students cheat in order to pass.
Speaking to XYZ News Mr. Ofori-Adjei said having this hurdle cleared at the basic school level will be one of the surest ways to solving the current problem bedevilling education in the country.
According to Mr. Ofori-Adjei, “The problem is from the JHS. I can assure you that students come here with 8 ‘ones’ – ‘one’ in English – and if they can’t piece together two sentences correctly, then ask yourself how did they make the ‘one’.”
He accused headmasters and teachers of such junior high schools of helping their students to cheat the system.
“I can assure you that most of the schools, a lot of cheating goes on when the BECE is going on - the heads and the teachers who are not reliable. I have seen it with my eyes before,” he lamented.
He revealed that sometimes the students are only helped to pass in order to popularize the school to the detriment of the students.
