The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain resolute and united, stressing that arrest should not be seen as a disgrace for politicians.

He made this remark during the thanksgiving service held after the election of Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer at University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on February 15, 2026.

Addressing party faithful, Afenyo-Markin cautioned that attempts could be made to divide the party through intimidation tactics, including arrests, particularly under the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

“Please, if you are a politician and you have been caught, it is not a sin. Let’s stand firm behind Dr Bawumia and win power in 2028. Don’t let them intimidate you with arrest,” he said.

He further warned that such tactics could intensify when political pressure mounts.

“Colleagues, they will try and divide us. They will come with all manner of arrests. (Every) now and then, when their back is against the wall, they will come with all manner of arrests,” he stated.

He called on supporters to remain focused on the NPP’s long-term objective of returning to power, urging loyalty and solidarity behind Dr Bawumia’s leadership.

Afenyo-Markin’s comments come amid heightened political tensions as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral season.
