Policeman in shooting incident case granted bail

Kumasi, Feb. 20, GNA- A district court at Ashanti Newtown in Kumasi, on Monday granted a 5000 Ghana cedis bail to Police Corpral Osei Kwame, who accidentally shot and killed a national service person at the Zongo police station in Kumasi.

The plea of the suspect was not taken and he will reappear before the court presided over by Mr S.K Achina on 3rd March this year. Police Inspector Hannah Acheampong told the court that on January 21 at about 2030 hours, the suspect together with two other colleagues arrived at the Zongo police station to prepare for duty at Asafo in Kumasi. He said upon arrival, the police men attempted to arrest a suspect in a stealing case, who had jumped over the charge office in an attempt to run away.

Inspector Hannah said in the course of pursuing the fleeing suspect, Corporal Osei fired three warning shots and one accidentally went astray and killed Emmanuel Osei, a national service person who had gone to visit his friend at the Zongo police barracks.

Prosecution said another person also sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.
