The police have confirmed that a violent clash between them and five suspected highway robbers on the Kumasi-Bibiani Road ended with the fatal shooting of one of the suspects, dailyguidenetwork.com reports.
The remaining four managed to escape, though they are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds, the report added.
Due to this, nearby hospitals and the general public have been urged to stay vigilant and report any individuals seeking medical attention for gun-related injuries.
The incident unfolded around 7:30 pm on June 2, 2025, when the armed suspects halted two passenger-filled vehicles at gunpoint, intending to carry out a robbery.
However, the report said their plans were disrupted when the police arrived at the scene, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
“Upon sighting the police, the suspects armed with the pump action gun, opened fire on the patrol team.
“The officers responded swiftly, returning fire and fatally wounding one of the suspects, who was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Afari Government Hospital," a police statement, signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Department, disclosed.
It added further that; “The remaining four suspects fled the scene and are currently at large."
Speaking on the four runaway suspects, he disclosed that the police believe that the “fleeing suspects may have sustained gunshot wounds,” as a result of the fierce gun battle with the police.
“The Police are, therefore, appealing to all medical facilities and practitioners to be on the lookout and report any persons presenting with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station,” he added.
DSP Ahianyo further explained that the deceased suspect's body has been placed in the Afari Government Hospital morgue for preservation and further investigation.
He commended the Nkawie Patrol Team for their swift response, bravery, and professionalism in handling the situation, preventing what could have been a tragic event.
He also urged the public to support the police in their efforts to maintain security.
