Police save student

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo) ? The Student Representative Council (SRC) treasurer of the Sunyani Polytechnic, accused by his colleagues of misappropriating 600,000 cedis belonging to the students, escaped lynching by a hair?s breadth last Friday.

Identified only as ?Stagger? by press time, the treasurer was rescued from the angry students by the timely intervention of the police. The police who were called in by the Principal of the school, Dr Kwasi Nsiah-Gyabaah, had it tough as the student pelted them with stones.

They had five warning shots to scare the students away before whisking ?Stagger? to the police station. It all started at about 2pm on that fateful day when the SRC Publicity Officer, known as Orall, a final year Accountancy student who claimed to have spotted the suspect, taking the money, alleged incited their colleague to beat the suspect also a final year Accountancy student.

As the suspect, took to his heels, the mob gave him a hot chase. The fortunate incident attracted the Principal, Dr Kwesi Nsiah-Gyabaah, won on realizing the tense atmosphere, called in the police. The suspect has now been granted police enquiry bail pending investigation in the case.

In an interview with the ?Times?, here at the weekend, the SRC President, Ernest Adade, said, the alleged stealing happened during the Christmas break. He said that the suspect had about 1.8m cedis believed to be SRC money, on him which should have been kept at the break but failed to do so.

Prior to the Christmas break, he (SRC President) demanded some money from the suspect who claimed that there was no money. The loss of the money, he said, was detected when they resumed classes and the Publicity Officer, alleged insisted that he spotted the suspect collecting the money from a bag.

When the suspect returned to campus last Thursday, the students pointed accusing fingers at him and nearly lynched him but for the timely police intervention. According to Adade, when the suspect was asked how much was left, he could not tell adding that the student body was thoroughly investigating the case.
