Police officer, 3 others to face court over robbery

The Accra Region Police Command commenced investigations into a police corporal who allegedly has been assisting armed robbers with guns for operations.

Apart from supplying guns to the robbers, Corporal Raymond Amegashie of the Tema Region SWAT team, was said to be a participant of some of the robbery operations.

The 35-year-old Cpl. Amegashie is believed to be the leader of a robbery gang that attacked and robbed a supermarket at Nungua in the Greater Accra region around 9.30 Tuesday night.

They reportedly made away with GHC54,000 from the Asante Supermarket amidst sporadic firing of AK47 riffles.

Three of the suspected armed robbers, 30-year-old Stanley Akorli; Ibrahim Ayeribo, 23 and Bright Dorkanu, 20, were intercepted at a police checkpoint at abattoir in a taxi they used in the robbery.

Cpl. Amegashie escaped at the first encounter but was arrested at Tsokpoli barrier on his way to the Volta Region. Two AK47 riffles were retrieved from him in addition to several ammunitions.

“We look forward to looking into him very well and finding out a lot about him. For now, it will be quite difficult for me to conclude or find out whether he has been engaged in several of this misconduct in the past,” Accra Regional Police PRO, ASP Afia Tenge told TV3.

The four are expectedto be put before court immediately investigations into the case is completed.

TV3 investigations have revealed that Cpl. Amegashie was due to start his promotional examination on Friday, December 15. His arrest brings to five, the number of police personnel arrested this year for their involvement in high profile crimes across the country.
